New Faculty Fall 2006 at the School of Technology



JOHN IRWIN

John Irwin joins the faculty of the School of Technology as an associate professor. He comes to Michigan Tech from Saginaw.

Irwin holds an EdD in Curriculum and Instruction from Wayne State University. He also holds an MS in Occupation Education, Training for Business and Industry, and a BS in Trade-Technical Teacher Education, Vocational Drafting, from Ferris State University and an AAS in Mechanical Design Engineering Technology from Michigan Tech.

His research interests include curriculum development using problem-based learning computer simulation activities.

Irwin has taught classes in Design Engineering Technology, Instructional Planning and Practice, Pre-Student Teaching Field Experience Curriculum Design and Evaluation, Foundations of Education and Principles of Teaching and Learning. He has written several papers for Mott Community College and Ferris State University.

He has received full vocational authorization in drafting by the state of Michigan's Department of Education. He also holds a continuing certificate from the state of Michigan's Department of Education in Grades 7-8 All Subjects and Grades 9-12 Vocational Technical and Physical Education. Irwin is a member of the Association of Engineering Educators, chairperson for the Technology Department Travel Committee and the MCCEA Electronics Committee, co-chairperson for the Committee for Excellence in Teaching and Learning and president of the Vocational Industrial Clubs of America Advisors. He also won the Outstanding Education Student award from Delta Kappa.

In the past, Irwin has worked in education and training services for Irwin Technical Training, Inc. He also worked as a computer simulation consultant for ICRC Engineering, a part-time manufacturing tool designer for Thomson Saginaw Ball Screw Company, a senior designer for Sigma Air Conditioning, Inc. and a layout drafter for Thermotron Industries.

ROBERT A. LIIMAKKA

Robert A. Liimakka joins the faculty of the School of Technology as an assistant professor. He comes to Michigan Tech from the University of Maine.

He holds a doctorate in civil engineering and an MS in Spatial Information Science and Engineering from the University of Maine, Orono. He also holds a BS in Land Surveying from Michigan Tech and an associate degree in engineering from Gogebic Community College.

Liimakka has taught classes in plane surveying, construction surveying and MicroStation labs for the University of Maine and the Eastern Maine Community College. He was a survey conference speaker at the Massachusetts Association of Land Surveyors and Civil Engineers.

Liimakka is a member of the Chi Epsilon National Civil Engineering Honor Society and the Phi Kappa Phi National Honor Society. He is also a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, the Michigan Tech Advisory Committee, the Michigan Society of Professional Surveyors and the National Society of Professional Surveyors.

In the past, he was a party chief for Cook Land Services, a survey manager for Wilcox Associates, a professional surveyor for Northwoods Land Management, a surveyor for the U.S. Forest Service, a party chief for Foley, Garske and Strigel, Inc., and a survey crew member and part-time crew chief for Superior Surveys, Inc.
