Lesson Plan:

Programmable Logic Controller Basics

Date:

April 4-8, 2005

Course No.:

EET3370

Week:

5

Unit:

Unit 2 – Programmable Logic Controllers

Instructor:

Prof. Powers

Objectives:

Upon completion of this unit, you will be able to:

·         Use the XIO, XIC, and OTE instructions.

·         Configure a ladder diagram to comply with PLC restrictions.

·         Properly address inputs, outputs, and internal bits.

·         Write and enter ladder logic.

·         Describe the operation of PLC counter instructions, including Up-Counter (CTU) and Down-Counter (CTD).

·         Analyze and interpret typical PLC timer and counter ladder logic diagrams.

·         Apply combinations of counters and timers to control systems.

·         Program the control of outputs using timer and counter instruction control bits.

Lab:  7 or 8 April

5 – Timer Circuits

Reading:

·         Read Chapter 14.

Assignment:

·         Week 5 Homework:  Q14-4 & Q14-5, and P14-4.
Note:  For P14-4, assume you are using an SLC-5/04 PLC with the input module in slot 5 and the output module in slot 7.

Show your work for all questions requiring calculations.

Evaluation:

·         Week 4 Homework due 6 April.

·         Lab 5 due 7 or 8 April.

·         Week 5 Homework due 11 April.

·         Unit 2 Test – 22 April (comprehensive).

Note:

·         Labs will be performed in teams of two or individually until further notice.

·         Demonstrate proper operation of the above experiments to your instructor.
