Unit:

Unit 1 – Special Purpose Diodes

Instructor:

Prof. Powers

Objective:

Upon completion of this unit, you will be able to:

·         Describe the characteristics of a zener diode and analyze its operation.

·         Explain how a zener can be used in voltage regulation and limiting application.

·         Describe the variable capacitance characteristics of a varacter diode and analyze its operation in a typical circuit.

·         Discuss the operation and characteristics of LEDs and photodiodes.

·         Discuss the basic characteristics of current regulators, Schottky, pin, step-recovery, tunnel, and laser diodes.
