The
following are ground rules for how I will handle administrative matters for
your class and lab:
Reaching the Instructor:
·
I am here to help
you succeed!
·
Please feel free
to contact me for extra help, or as discussed below, at:
·
E-mail: mpowers@mtu.edu (preferred)
·
Phone: 906-487-2638
·
Schedule:
Monday
Tuesday
Wednesday
Thursday
Friday
2:05 to 2:55 PM Office Hours (Room 412)
Assignments:
·
You are required
to complete and turn-in assignments (written assignments, quizzes, labs, tests,
examinations, evaluations, projects, etc.) according to the directions, on or
before the due date.
·
Clearly label
each assignment with your name and class section. All work must be completed neatly; assignments that are difficult to
read or follow will not be graded.
Assignments must be stapled.
Spiral notebook paper will not be accepted.
·
If you are
absent, it is your responsibility to determine if you missed any assignments
and to turn in any assignments that may have been due while you were absent.
·
Assignments are
communicated to the class in advance through the weekly lesson plan so there
will be adequate time for completion – they will be due before the test for that unit.
·
If you know you
will be absent the day an assignment is due, tell me in advance. If you are absent due to an emergency, email
(preferred) or call me and let me know.
If you don’t contact me, any assignment turned in late will be handled
as “Late Work.” (See below)
·
Short,
unannounced quizzes will be given at your instructor’s discretion. Quizzes are not eligible for make-up.
Extra Credit:
·
Extra credit
assignments may be offered on occasion.
They will be due no later than the date indicated and will not be graded
if submitted late for any reason.
Attendance:
·
You are expected
to attend class and laboratory sessions on a regular and continuing basis, as
stated in the Student Handbook and Catalog.
·
You are expected
to arrive on time, according to the class schedule, and not depart until given
permission.
·
Attendance is
taken at the beginning of each class period – if you are not present then, you
will be marked absent. If you arrive
late, it is your responsibility to see me at the end of class or on a break to
make sure the attendance is corrected.
·
Tell me in
advance if you know you will be
absent (a short written note or e-mail with your name, class section number and
the date(s) you expect to be absent will suffice).
Unit Tests / Evaluations:
·
Tests will be
given at the completion of a unit and will be announced at least one week in
advance. For the most part, this will be
at the end of each unit, but alterations will be made to accommodate the class
schedule.
·
Test and
Evaluations will be closed-note, closed book and definitely “closed-classmate.”
Formula Sheets (one 8½ x 11, one-sided sheet of paper) and scientific
calculators will be permitted. Any
deviations to this policy will be announced.
·
A 5-point Extra
Credit will automatically be given on the Unit Tests for those who have perfect
attendance during the entire unit of study.
·
If you miss a
unit test or evaluation, you must see me to schedule a time outside of normal
class hours to make it up immediately upon your return. Missed tests or evaluations must be made-up
within one week of your return or they will be subject to the deductions
described under "Late Work."
Keep in mind that make-up tests will be fill-in.
·
Note: On
Test/Evaluation days, you will not be allowed to borrow anything once the bell
rings – it is your responsibility to come to class or lab prepared!
·
Special Note: Do not be
late on test or lab evaluation days – you will not be granted additional time
to complete the test or evaluation unless prior arrangements were made.
Late Work:
·
Any assignment
turned in or completed after it is due is late.
Deductions to the assignment’s maximum grade will be as follows:
·
Up to one week
late: 10%
·
Past one week
late: 10% per week
late
·
Unless special
arrangements are made ahead of time, no assignment will be accepted after the
last scheduled class session.
Student Supplies:
·
Bring the
following to each class or lab session, in addition to whatever other materials
you may need for that specific lab or class:
·
Number 2 pencil
·
Text/Lab books
for the class or lab
·
Paper for notes
and/or calculations
·
Scientific
Calculator
General:
·
You will treat
everyone in the classroom with respect
·
There is no
eating allowed in the classroom or laboratory.
·
You may bring in
a drink if it has a secure lid or ‘screw-on’ top.
·
Your conduct and
dress are expected to be per the class conduct guidelines and dress code in the
Student Handbook and Catalog. Behavior
that disrupts the class will not be tolerated.
·
Headphones may
not be used in theory or lab.
·
Cell phones and
pagers are to be turned-off while in the classroom or lab. If, for any reason, you must have one turned
on during class, talk to me about it prior to class.
