The Summer Youth class in Modern Electronic Communication emphasizes practical, hands-on laboratory work that is closely coordinated with theoretical classroom discussion. The high school students learn how standard communication and wireless communication systems operate, such as FM/AM broadcasting, aircraft navigation, and cellular phones. The hands-on include the construction of an alarm system, and a FM radio receiver, that allow students to listening to standard FM radio, tune FM wireless mikes, phone bugs, and even “snooping around” for clandestine transmitters. In addition, the students also learn how to implement basic communication systems using simulation software, such as Multisim and LabView, how to simulate test equipment, such as oscilloscopes and digital multimeters, and verify how components behave (input versus output).
